Principles for Godliness and Wisdom

“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad:” (Proverbs 3:9)

In recent essays, we saw several positive traits about King Solomon. First, we see he obeyed God: “And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father:” (1 Kings 3:3) Also, when God made an amazing offer of, “Ask what I shall give thee.” (1 Kings 3:5), Solomon recognized himself as God’s servant: “…thou [God] hast made thy servant king…” (1 Kings 3:7)

He also knew he wasn’t wise enough to rule as king on his own: “…I am but a little child:” (1 Kings 3:7) He also realized God had put him into a very important position of power: “And thy servant is in the midst of thy people…” (1 Kings 3:8)

Finally, Solomon asked God, “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad:” (Proverbs 3:9) 1 Kings 3:10 goes on to say, “And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.” God told Solomon, “…lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart;” (1 Kings 3:12)

This story isn’t in the Bible just so we can read about Solomon. God wants to give us wisdom, too: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,” (Romans 15:4) No matter your walk of life, you need wisdom. This story tells us how to seek it from the Lord.

First, strive to obey God in everyday life. If you love Jesus, obey Him: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) God’s Word says to attend a Bible-preaching church faithfully, spend time in His Word and prayer, tell people about Him, and strive to honor Jesus in your conduct. None of these are really difficult: “…his commandments are not grievous.” (1 John 5:3)

Second, recognize you’re God’s servant, to do His will and not yours, no matter your position in life: “…all are thy [God’s] servants.” (Psalm 119:91) Third, realize you need God’s help to do your job wisely. Fourth, realize God has you in an important position where wisdom is crucial.

Finally, consult God’s Word often. Read it. Memorize it. Meditate on it. God gave it for us “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;” (Proverbs 1:2) Pray also for the grace to “discern good and bad” in decision-making: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5)

God gave us His Word so we could be wise in life. Most importantly, He tells us in His Word how to be sure of a home in heaven when we die. If you want to be sure of a home in heaven, please go to www.clevelandbaptist.org, click “Helpful Links,” then “How Do I Go to Heaven?”
