Power to Give Peace of Mind

When you have peace of mind about a matter, it’s wonderful. The best peace of mind you can have is knowing your sins are forgiven and heaven is your eternal home. The Bible says you can have this peace of mind. 1 John 5:13 says, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

The term “These things” means things in Scripture. “You that believe on the name of the Son of God” means people who received Jesus as Saviour. Truths are in Scripture so people who received Jesus as Saviour “may know that ye have eternal life, and “…that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” They can rest assured they are saved. They do not need to listen to someone who tries to say receiving Jesus as Saviour is not enough to get to heaven, when the Bible says clearly that it is.

The truth of certainty of heaven through Jesus is found in many places in the Bible. Titus 1:2 says, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” This verse says two things: that God cannot lie, and that He promised eternal life. So if a person receives Jesus as personal Saviour but does not go to heaven, then God failed to fulfill a promise He had made. That means He lied. God cannot lie. Lying is a sin. God is Holy. He does not sin.

“The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” (Psalm 145:17)

Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?” When a sinner realizes he is lost and headed for hell, and that Jesus died for his sins and rose again; and when the sinner turns in repentance to Jesus, trusting entirely in Jesus to forgive and save him, and calls upon Him, the Lord saves him.

Paul told believers about “…the hope which is laid up for you in heaven,” (Colossians 1:5) How could he be so sure? Because anyone who receives Jesus as Saviour has eternal life. Peter also told believers about “…an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,” (1 Peter 1:4) Their home in heaven was sure, reserved for them. That statement was put into the Bible because it is not just for them, but for anyone who receives Jesus as their personal Saviour.

John the apostle said, “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” (1 John 5:12) He didn’t mean earthly life. Everyone has that. He meant eternal life. To “have the Son” means you have received Jesus into your heart and life as your personal Saviour. Jesus Himself also said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” (John 6:47)

How can we be sure of eternal life when we haven’t died yet, and will likely sin again? The answer is simple but amazing. Hebrews 10:12 says, “But this man [Jesus], after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;” Think of those words. One sacrifice. For sins, all sins. For ever. Jesus’ death paid for every sin every person would ever commit. It was a one-time event. No second sacrifice would be needed. We may not be able to fathom this truth, but we can trust God that it is true.

When Christians sin, and we do at times, God chastens us to correct us. “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” (Hebrews 12:5-6) Yet God does not take back salvation.
