Truth, Love, and Transgenderism
“Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” (Matthew 19:4-5)
Jesus said that God made people male and female. Some may ask, “But what about transgender people? Did Jesus say anything about them?” Yes. He said, “…he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” In other words, He said there are only two sexes, male and female, and everyone is what they were at conception.
Does that mean Jesus lied? No. If He lied, then He was a sinner. He was not God the Son, His death meant nothing, and we have no Saviour. Did Jesus have incomplete info? Again, no. He is God and “…his understanding is infinite.” (Psalm 147:5) He knew there would be so-called transgender people later on.
Did Jesus hate transgenders? No! Jesus loves people. He said, “…I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.” (John 12:47) He wants to forgive and save people, but in the process, He shows people their sin and their need for Him. Jesus pointed out people’s sin many times. He did that with the scribes and Pharisees. He did that with a woman who had been married five times and was living with a man.
So what about people who are physically one sex but say they feel they are the other? In order to answer that question on an individual basis, one would have to know the thoughts of a person’s heart. Only God can do that: “…he knoweth the secrets of the heart.” (Psalm 44:21) Yet the Bible gives us some insights.
Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things,” Our hearts and feelings can deceive us so we think something is right when it isn’t. That can happen to anyone. Proverbs 14:12 also says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Suicide, for instance, is never a good idea, but people do it. Apparently, in their emotional state, it seems right at the time.
The devil also can and often does tempt people to disregard what God says and make bad choices. He told Eve, contrary to God’s warning, “Ye shall not surely die [if you eat the forbidden fruit]: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5) In other words, “God is the bad guy, Eve. Don’t listen to him.”
It also doesn’t help when courts and leaders make judgments and impose laws on the populace contrary to God’s Word, based on how some people say they feel. They may think they are doing right, but when they either don’t know God’s Word or won’t take heed to it, they fall for the same temptation as Eve.
Not all men or all women fit a stereotypical image, but God does not make mistakes: “The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” (Psalm 145:17) To represent yourself as other than what God made you is a lie and a sin, but not unforgivable. Jesus paid for it on the cross. You can be forgiven and cleansed of it: “…the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)
You can always trust the Lord Jesus to speak the truth and to have your best interests at heart. He loves you so much that He died a horrible death for your sins on the cross. Yet He rose again victoriously.
