How Did Things Go Wrong?

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork.” The glorious, starry night sky shows us how glorious God is. Northern Ohio’s night sky is nice, but it’s nothing like Arizona’s night sky! You may live in an area with a beautiful, starry night sky like Arizona’s. God put all the stars in place. He can count them all. He even named them! “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” (Psalm 147:4)

Genesis 1 gives us an overview of creation. It doesn’t try to prove there’s a God. We already know there’s a God. It starts with, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) As you read through the chapter, you will see that on each of six days, God created certain things. God also saw what He had created on each day and saw that it was good. God created man on Day 6. Afterward, Genesis 1:31 says, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” So why isn’t everything very good now? If you jump to Genesis 3:1-5, you’ll see:

“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:1-5)

Satan saw Eve was curious, so he got her to doubt God’s word: “Yea, hath God said,” Then he called God a liar with His warning of death: “Ye shall not surely die:” He also accused God of ulterior motives: “…For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof,” Finally, he pointed out the supposed benefit of eating the fruit: “…ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

Adam and Eve chose their will instead of God’s. That’s really what sin is. When they did, they took on a nature to do what they wanted, even if it were wrong. It’s sometimes called a sin nature. We all have it. We got it from Adam and Eve. When someone does wrong on any level, it basically boils down to him doing what he wants and not what God wants. When God asked Adam if he’d eaten the fruit. Adam blamed Eve and even blamed God: “The woman WHOM THOU GAVEST TO BE WITH ME, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.” (Genesis 3:12, capitals added) Ever hear kids—or adults–blame someone else when they get into trouble? “He said to do it!”

God expelled them from the Garden, but He also assured them that all hope was not lost. God promised that Someone would come one day to redeem them from the sins that had separated them from God. As our verse says, God told the serpent that the seed of the woman—the offspring who would be born one day—would deal the devil a fatal blow:”…it shall bruise thy head,” while the devil would only be able to inflict a temporary, non-fatal blow: “…thou shalt bruise his heel.”

That prophecy was one of many that were fulfilled when Jesus, God the Son, was crucified for our sins. His death was only a temporary blow. He was buried, rose again, and is alive today! “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen;” (Revelation 1:18)

He offers eternal forgiveness and a home in heaven to all who will receive Him. If you would like to know how to receive Jesus as Saviour, please go to www.clevelandbaptist.org
