Fighting God Again

    “…if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot over- throw it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.” (Acts 5:38-39)

   After Jesus’ resurrection, ascension into heaven, and Pentecost, His followers preached boldly in His name. The Jewish council told them to stop, but they had a command from Jesus they were determined to obey. The council would have killed them, but one council member, Gamaliel, warned the others to leave them alone. Gamaliel warned them that by ordering them not to do what the Lord had said they should do, they would be fighting against God.

   To enact laws requiring disobedience to God’s word is to fight against God. California AB 957 would have required a judge in a custody case to consider a parent’s affirmation of a child’s gender identity in granting custody. So if a boy wanted to act like a girl, parents would have to comply with him or risk losing custody. Matthew 19:4 says God “…made them male and female,” so to comply with AB 957 would have been to hold man’s authority in a higher regard than God’s: thus a fight against God.

   California AB 1955 similarly reads that a school employee “…shall not be required to disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent unless otherwise required by state or federal law.” Sec. 5, Section 220.3 (a) The term, “any other person” can include parents, so schools can keep parents out of the loop.

   The stated idea is to protect the student from harassment or abuse, which no student should have to endure. However, here are some important truths from Scripture for the sake of clarity:

   Parents, not schools or political leaders, are the first authority in a child’s life: “Honour thy father and thy mother:” (Exodus 20:12) “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” (Ephesians 6:1) “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:” (Proverbs 1:8)

   Same-sex conduct and transgenderism are sins: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22) “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment:” (Deuteronomy 22:5) To be tempted by these sins does not mean you are guilty of them, only that you are being tempted by them. People can be tempted by these sins, just as people can be tempted by any other sin. Temptation can also be resisted, just as with any other sin.

   Those who encourage sin are not friends: “Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!” (Habakkuk 2:15) Those involved in certain sins may tend to tempt others: “My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.” (Proverbs 1:10) AB 1955 was introduced by the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus.

   AB 1955 undercuts parental authority by encouraging students to avoid parents’ guidance. It also forces Bible-believing school employees to disobey God or risk losing their jobs. Thus it is a fight against God.

   The government has no duty to help Christians preach the gospel or share God’s word. Jesus even said, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21) Likewise, homosexuals and transgenders have a right in America to live as they see fit, but the government has no duty to help their cause, especially when it means fighting against God.

   The biggest problem in people’s lives is sin. Sin separates people from God and condemns them to hell. Not all people are guilty of the same sins, but all people are guilty of sin. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Jesus died for sins, was buried, and rose again.
