Doing the Devil’s Dirty Work
“Who is on the LORD’s side?” (Exodus 32:26)
God uses people to accomplish his will. Satan does, too. When Satan tempted Eve, “…she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” (Genesis 3:6) The devil tempted Eve, and he used her to tempt Adam. People who encourage others to sin are doing the devil’s dirty work, whether or not they believe they are or even believe that God or the devil exist.
Those in the entertainment industry who help produce sinful material do the devil’s dirty work. Psalm 101:3 says, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes:” Yet when people produce profane material or that encourages sin, they coax listeners and viewers to set wicked things before their eyes and ears and to sin. They do not force people to listen or watch, but they make material available, and they do it for money; just as a drug dealer does not force addicts to buy his wares but makes them available: for money.
To encourage sin is to play with people’s souls. Sin deceives people and hardens their hearts against God. Hebrews 3:13 warns,“…lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” People who promote sin encourage others to heed the devil’s deception and harden their hearts against God’s word.
Jesus also said, “…he that believeth not [on Jesus as Saviour] is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:18-19) As the Bible says, people go to hell because love of sin persuades them to reject Jesus as their Saviour. So those who encourage sin do Satan’s work as they encourage others to reject Jesus as Saviour and die lost.
The devil “…was a murderer from the beginning,” (John 8:44) The Pharaoh who had Hebrew boys cast into the river was a murderer. He may not have known the Redeemer of mankind would be a Jew. Satan did. He heard God tell Abraham, “…and in thee shall all nations of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3) This was a prophecy of Jesus. That’s why Satan tempted Pharaoh to kill the boys. No boys, no Saviour. No Saviour, mankind is doomed. Whether Pharaoh believed Satan existed or not, he did his dirty work.
Those who hinder the gospel do Satan’s dirty work. Paul spoke of Jews hostile to the gospel, “Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved,” (1 Thessalonians 2:15-16) He also said, “…we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.” (1 Thessalonians 2:18) As Scripture says, people did Satan’s dirty work by hindering the gospel.
Job was a loyal servant of God. Satan said Job was only loyal because God made him rich. If God took away his wealth, the devil said, Job would curse God to His face. So God let Satan tempt Job:
“And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am left alone to tell thee.” (Job 1:14-15) “…there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.” (Job 1:17)
The Sabean and Chaldean criminals were doing Satan’s dirty work. He uses people willing to do wrong.
Daniel 2:21 says God puts people into places of power. God “…removeth kings and setteth up kings:” Romans 13:1also says, “…the powers that be are ordained of God.” Yet a political leader who uses the position God gave him to support sin does Satan’s dirty work. Politics can be a spiritual battle between those wanting to serve God and do right and those willing to do the devil’s dirty work and encourage sin.
